Some trends start on runways, others on sidewalks. This season’s most charming look began on the streets: a flowing midi dress, a soft wool beret and a light trench coat thrown over the shoulders. Street-style photographers say they have seen it everywhere from Chicago’s West Loop to the cobblestones of Old City Philadelphia.
“It is romantic but practical,” says Seattle street-style photographer Owen Takahashi, who has documented the trend for three months. “The beret keeps the look from feeling too sweet, and a midi dress is comfortable enough for walking all day.”
Choosing The Dress
Look for a midi length in a fabric with movement, such as crepe, satin-finish viscose or a light georgette lined for opacity. Soft neutrals like sand, ivory and pale gray look elegant, while small florals and polka dots lean playful. A defined waist, either with a belt or a wrap shape, keeps the silhouette balanced.
Layering is key once temperatures drop. A fine-knit cardigan worn over the dress, or a turtleneck worn underneath, extends the look into late October. Finish with a lightweight trench and ankle boots or simple Mary Jane flats.
Patterns can add personality without fuss. Small florals, gingham and polka dots all pair well with a beret and keep the look playful. If you prefer a quieter style, a solid dress in a muted tone, such as dove gray or soft sage, lets the accessories stand out. Takahashi has noticed that many people photographed in this look carry a small leather bag and wear simple gold jewelry. “It is all very easy,” he says. “Nothing looks too planned, but everything goes together.” The look also works across age groups, which may explain why it has spread so quickly from city to city this fall.
The Right Beret
Felted wool berets in camel, black and cream are the most versatile. Wear it pushed back slightly from the forehead and tilted, rather than pulled down straight. “The angle is everything,” Takahashi laughs. “A beret pulled down looks like a costume. Tipped back, it looks chic.”
Prices are friendly: good wool berets start around $25, and many midi dresses fall between $60 and $150. It is one of the most affordable ways to look put together this fall, and the combination works just as well for a gallery stroll as it does for a Sunday brunch.
