Actress Amara Lewis On Fame, Family And Her Favorite Earrings

Two years ago, Amara Lewis was working as a substitute teacher in Atlanta and auditioning on weekends. Today, she is the lead of “Northfield,” one of the most-watched streaming dramas of the year, and her face is on billboards from Los Angeles to New York.

“It still feels surreal,” Lewis says over coffee at a quiet hotel lounge. “My mom texts me photos every time she sees a billboard. She has hundreds of them.”

Staying Grounded

Lewis credits her family for keeping her steady. She calls her parents almost every day and spends holidays at their home in Georgia. “When I go home, nobody cares about the show,” she laughs. “I’m still the one who has to do the dishes.”

She is also careful about how she spends her time. Lewis limits social media, reads every script herself and keeps a small circle of close friends. “Fame can make the world very loud,” she says. “I try to protect the quiet.” “Northfield,” which follows a small-town doctor who returns home to care for her ailing father, has resonated with audiences for its warmth and realism. Lewis says she drew on her own family experiences to shape the role. “My grandfather was sick for a long time when I was a teenager,” she says. “I remember the hospital waiting rooms, the casseroles from neighbors, the way everyone tried to stay strong. I brought all of that to the character.” The show’s creator, Rachel Simmons, says Lewis brought authenticity to every scene. “She makes you believe every word,” Simmons says. “That is a rare gift.”

The Earrings That Mean Everything

At nearly every major event, fans spot Lewis wearing a pair of gold hoop earrings. They have a story. “My grandmother gave them to me when I graduated from college,” she says. “She told me to wear them whenever I needed to feel brave.”

Lewis wore them to her first audition for “Northfield,” and to every premiere since. Her stylist, Corinne Avery, builds looks around them, choosing warm tones and simple silhouettes that let the gold shine. “They are part of who she is,” Avery says.

Next, Lewis will appear in a feature film about a jazz singer in 1950s Chicago. “I’m nervous and excited,” she admits. “But I’ll have my earrings.”
