Review: Juniper Table Is The Neighborhood Bistro Austin Needed

Some restaurants are built to impress. Juniper Table seems built to make you stay. The East Side bistro, which opened in June, has terracotta walls, curved banquettes, a long bar bathed in afternoon light and the kind of easy, unhurried service that makes a two-hour dinner feel like a short one.

Owners Grace Holloway and Mateo Reyes, a former sommelier and a longtime line cook, wanted a place their neighbors could visit twice a week. The menu is short, seasonal and priced to make that possible, with most mains under $30.

What To Order

Start with the warm sourdough and cultured butter, then the charred okra with smoked yogurt and chili crisp, an inspired twist on a Southern staple. The chilled tomato salad with stone fruit and basil oil tastes exactly like late summer in Texas.

The roast chicken for two is the reason to come. It arrives bronzed and fragrant, carved over bread that soaks up the pan juices, with a bright green herb sauce on the side. It is simple, generous and nearly perfect. Add a side of crispy potatoes with garlic aioli and a bitter green salad, and two people will leave happily full for well under $90 before drinks. Vegetarians are not an afterthought either; a smoky eggplant dish with tahini and pickled peppers is hearty enough to stand as a main course.

“We wanted the kind of food you crave on a Tuesday,” Holloway says. “Nothing on the menu needs an explanation. It just needs to be delicious.”

Room For Improvement

Not every dish matches the chicken. A hanger steak on our second visit was cooked well but under-seasoned, and desserts were uneven: an excellent olive oil cake one night, a grainy panna cotta the next.

Those are small complaints in a restaurant that gets the big things right. The wine list, curated by Holloway, leans toward small producers with plenty of good bottles under $60, and the bar team mixes a lovely spritz with Texas grapefruit.

Juniper Table takes reservations for about half the room and saves the bar and patio for walk-ins. Arrive by 6 p.m. on weekends, order the chicken and settle in. You will probably end up staying for one more glass.
