Review: The Halcyon Slate 14 Is the Laptop Most Professionals Should Buy

There is a particular kind of laptop that never makes headlines but ends up in thousands of briefcases: thin, reliable, comfortable to type on and powerful enough that you forget about it. The Halcyon Slate 14 is that laptop, refined to a degree we rarely see at this price.

Halcyon, a Seattle company founded by former aerospace engineers, machines the Slate’s chassis from a single block of recycled aluminum. The result is rigid and cool to the touch, and at 2.6 pounds it disappears into a tote bag. The hinge opens with one finger, and the lid feels solid enough to survive years of airport security trays.

Built For Long Workdays

The keyboard deserves special praise. Keys have 1.5 millimeters of travel with a soft but decisive landing, and the backlight adjusts automatically in dim rooms. The glass trackpad is wide, accurate and properly tuned, so gestures never feel laggy. The 14-inch display uses a 16:10 ratio and a 2.8K resolution, which gives spreadsheets and documents extra breathing room without making text tiny.

“Our customers live in their laptops for nine or ten hours a day,” says Halcyon co-founder Renata Okafor. “We obsessed over the parts they touch and look at, and we tested battery life with real apps instead of a looping video.”

Performance And Battery

Inside, the Slate runs a 12-core processor with 16 gigabytes of memory and a 1-terabyte drive in our review unit. It exported a 200-photo batch in under two minutes and handled 4K video timelines with only occasional stutters. Under heavy load the fan stays at a gentle hum that is barely audible in an office.

Halcyon also deserves credit for repairability. The bottom panel is held by standard screws, and the battery, storage and Wi-Fi card can be replaced at home with basic tools. The company sells spare parts directly and publishes step-by-step repair guides online. That approach should extend the laptop’s useful life considerably and makes the price easier to justify for buyers who keep machines for years.

Battery life is where the Slate pulls ahead. In our standard video playback test it lasted just over 15 hours, and a typical workday of email, video calls and documents left around 40 percent in the tank. The weak spots are minor. The 1080p webcam is merely fine, and the speakers sound thin with music. For most buyers, though, the Slate 14 is the most complete everyday laptop we have used this year, and its four-year warranty option is a welcome safety net.
