Review: Willowbrook Harbor Is the Coziest Game of the Year

After a long day, there is something deeply comforting about sailing a little wooden boat back into a quiet harbor as the sun sets. Willowbrook Harbor, the new life simulation game from Portland studio Little Lantern Games, is built around moments like that, and it might be the most soothing game released this year.

Players arrive in Willowbrook, a seaside village that has fallen on hard times after its fishing industry declined. Your task is to help bring the community back to life by fishing, farming, crafting, decorating and building friendships with roughly 30 villagers, each with their own stories and routines.

A Village Full Of Heart

The writing is the game’s secret strength. The grumpy lighthouse keeper slowly reveals a moving backstory, a young baker dreams of opening a cafe in the city, and the village mayor struggles to keep everyone hopeful. Completing quests unlocks new buildings and seasonal festivals that make the town feel genuinely alive.

“We wanted players to feel like they were part of a community, not just completing chores,” says creative director Hannah Lee. “Every villager has a life that continues whether you are watching or not.”

Beautiful And Relaxing

The hand-painted art style is gorgeous, with soft watercolor skies and cozy interiors filled with tiny details. The soundtrack, featuring acoustic guitar, piano and gentle accordion, adapts to the weather and time of day. Rainy evenings in the village tavern are a particular delight.

The opening hours move slowly as the game introduces its many systems, and inventory management can become fiddly once your collection grows. But once the village begins to flourish, it becomes hard to put down. There is easily 60 hours of content here, plus an online co-op mode for up to four friends.

Seasons bring meaningful changes. Spring festivals fill the village square with flowers, summer brings rare fish to the harbor and autumn turns the hillside orchards gold. Winter introduces a cozy ice-fishing mini-game and a village-wide holiday market. Each season lasts about 28 in-game days, giving players plenty of time to plan crops, decorate their homes and prepare gifts for the villagers they love most.

Accessibility options are excellent, including adjustable text sizes, a mode that removes time pressure and full controller remapping. Willowbrook Harbor costs $29.99 on PC and all major consoles. For anyone who loves calm, creative games, it is an easy recommendation.
