Why Tangerine Is The Color Everyone Is Wearing Right Now

For years, fall wardrobes meant a predictable palette of navy, camel, olive and black. This season, a brighter shade is cutting through the gray: tangerine, a warm, juicy orange that shows up in tailored trousers, flowing jumpsuits and even outerwear.

“Orange is a color of energy and approachability,” says color consultant Marisol Vega of the Pacific Color Institute in San Diego. “After several years of muted neutrals, people want clothes that feel happy. Tangerine is warm enough for autumn but still reads as fresh.”

Making A Bold Color Wearable

If head-to-toe orange feels like too much, start with one piece. A tangerine knit under a gray coat, or wide-leg trousers with a white shirt, introduces the color without overwhelming. Vega recommends balancing it with crisp whites, soft creams or denim, all of which keep the look grounded.

Those who want to go further can try tonal dressing: pairing tangerine with rust, peach and terracotta in different textures. “Tonal outfits look sophisticated because the eye reads them as one long line,” Vega says. “It is the same principle as an all-black outfit, just a lot more cheerful.”

The shade also works beautifully in different fabrics. A tangerine knit feels cozy and approachable, while satin or silk gives it an evening glow. Linen versions, often available through early fall, look relaxed and sunny for warm days in the South and West. Vega suggests paying attention to how the color behaves in different light. “Orange can look very different under office lighting than it does outdoors,” she says. “Try pieces on near a window if you can.” Accessories in natural materials, such as tan leather, woven straw or warm wood, complement tangerine perfectly and keep the overall look from feeling too loud or too synthetic.

Where To Find It

Retailers have embraced the shade across price points. Mid-range brands are offering tangerine utility jumpsuits around $120, while a Los Angeles label known for linen suiting has released a fall wool version at $340 for the jacket. Accessories are an even easier way in: a bright tote or a pair of suede flats adds a flash of color to an otherwise neutral outfit.

Skin tone matters less than you might think. Cooler complexions can lean toward red-orange, while warmer ones look radiant in a softer apricot. Above all, Vega says, wear it with confidence. “Bright color is about attitude. If you love it, it will look right on you.”
