Review: The Ashen Crown Is an Epic Fantasy RPG With Real Heart

Every few years, a role-playing game arrives that feels like a world you could get lost in. The Ashen Crown, the long-awaited fantasy epic from Emberfall Studios, is one of those games. Over roughly 70 hours, it tells a sweeping story of rebellion, family and sacrifice with a maturity that rarely appears in the genre.

Players take on the role of Seren Ashvale, a disgraced royal guard who discovers that the kingdom’s beloved queen has made a dark bargain to save her people. What follows is a journey across five distinct regions, from misty highland forests to a sunken city ruled by pirates.

Choices That Matter

The writing is exceptional. Companions are complex and flawed, and their loyalty shifts depending on your decisions. Early choices ripple through the story in surprising ways, sometimes dozens of hours later. Several of our editors finished the game with dramatically different endings, sparking long debates in the office.

“We wanted players to feel the weight of leadership,” says narrative director Elise Navarro. “There is rarely a perfect answer in The Ashen Crown. Every choice helps someone and hurts someone else, just like real life.”

Combat And Exploration

Combat blends real-time sword fighting with tactical pauses that let you direct companions and cast spells. It works well, though fighting common enemies can grow repetitive in the second half. The skill tree offers plenty of flexibility, letting you build anything from a stealthy archer to a heavily armored spellblade.

The open world is breathtaking. Sunlight streams through ancient forests, storms roll across the sea and every town is filled with side quests that feel handcrafted. The orchestral soundtrack and strong voice acting add to the immersion. Our main complaint involves performance: frame rates occasionally dipped in crowded cities, though a launch patch improved stability.

Side quests are where the world truly comes alive. A grieving blacksmith asks you to recover his daughter’s lost sword, a traveling theater troupe needs protection on the road and a village debates whether to trust a mysterious stranger. Many of these stories connect to the main plot in unexpected ways, rewarding curious players who take time to explore every corner of the kingdom.

The Ashen Crown is available now for $69.99 on PC and current consoles. For fans of rich storytelling and deep role-playing, it is an essential experience and one of the year’s finest games.
